Raised By Swans: A Toronto Alternative Band Returns to the Stage
In the early 2000s, Toronto alternative band Raised By Swans began building significant momentum within Canada’s independent music scene.
Led by frontman and vocalist Eric, the band developed a distinctive sound that attracted a growing audience and caught the attention of filmmaker Atom Egoyan, a fellow Toronto-based artist.
Egoyan was preparing to direct Chloe, a psychological thriller starring Amanda Seyfried, Julianne Moore, and Liam Neeson. Impressed by Raised By Swans’ music, he invited the band to make a brief appearance in the film and prominently featured their song “We Were Never Young” in several scenes.
The opportunity represented more than a film placement. It was a meaningful gesture of support for a promising band from Toronto’s own creative community, giving Raised By Swans exposure beyond the traditional independent music circuit and introducing their music to a wider audience.
Although Raised By Swans achieved a respected low- to mid-level standing within the music industry, the band never quite made the leap into mainstream stardom. Nevertheless, their music continued to resonate with dedicated listeners, and their early work established a lasting place within Toronto’s alternative music landscape.
After years away from the spotlight, frontman Eric eventually stepped back from music, taking an extended hiatus from performing and recording.
Now, with renewed motivation and a fresh creative drive, Raised By Swans is returning to the stage.The band is embarking on a series of local performances, revisiting the songs that first earned them a devoted following while reconnecting with longtime fans and introducing their music to a new generation of listeners.
But this return is about more than nostalgia. Raised By Swans is also looking ahead, with new music in development and the promise of new material on the horizon.
For a band that came close to breaking through two decades ago, this next chapter represents an opportunity to pick up where the story left off — not by simply revisiting the past, but by building upon it.
Raised By Swans is back. The songs remain. The memories remain. And there is still new music to come.
