There are many different types of record deals in the music industry, and each one offers different levels of funding, control, ownership, and promotion. Here are some of the most common:
Traditional Record Deal
A major or independent label funds recording, marketing, promotion, distribution, and sometimes touring support. In return, the label usually owns a large percentage of the artist’s music rights and revenue.
Distribution Deal
The artist keeps ownership of their music while a company distributes the music to streaming platforms and stores. The distributor may also provide marketing support.
360 Deal
The label invests heavily in the artist and shares revenue from multiple income streams including music sales, touring, merchandise, endorsements, and publishing.
Single Deal
A label signs an artist for one song only. If the single performs well, a larger deal may follow.
EP Deal
The label releases and promotes a short project or EP instead of a full album commitment.
Album Deal
The artist signs to release one or more full-length albums through a label.
Licensing Deal
The artist owns the master recordings but licenses the music to a label for a set period of time. After the contract expires, rights often return to the artist.
Production Deal
A producer or production company develops the artist and then shops the artist to larger labels. The producer often receives a percentage of profits or ownership.
Development Deal
The label invests in helping the artist improve their image, sound, branding, and fanbase before a major commercial release.
Joint Venture Deal
An artist, executive, or independent label partners with a larger label and shares profits, risks, and ownership.
Profit Split Deal
Instead of traditional royalty structures, profits are split between the artist and label after expenses are recouped.
Publishing Deal
Focused on songwriting rather than recordings. A music publisher helps place songs, collect royalties, and secure licensing opportunities.
Sync Licensing Deal
Music is licensed for movies, TV shows, commercials, video games, or streaming content.
Independent Artist Deal
Artists remain independent and hire separate teams for marketing, PR, management, or promotion while maintaining ownership and control.
Today many artists combine independent distribution with online promotion, branding, and social media marketing instead of relying solely on traditional major label deals. Companies like Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner Music Group still dominate the industry, but independent promotion platforms and digital distribution have created more options for artists than ever before.
